‘Canibal’ premieres Friday in Bucharest


Canibal, a film directed by Manuel Martin Cuenca that earned for Olimpia Melinte a nomination for the prestigious Goya Awards (‘Female revelation of the year’ category) will have its gala premiere this Friday at the Studio Cinema in Bucharest, the film’s distributor, Transilvania Film, has announced. Actress Olimpia Melinte will also attend the viewing. Starting Friday, the film will be coming to Romanian theaters.
Carlos, the main character in Canibal, is a renowned tailor of Granada who moonlights as a killer. He feels no remorse or guilt about his victims until Nina (played by Olimpia Melinte) steps into his life. Experiencing love for the first time, he is forced to acknowledge the true nature of his actions. The two lovers symbolize un-conceptualized evil and pure innocence. The male lead is played by Antonio de la Torre, known for his roles in Family United (set to premiere soon in cinemas across Romania), Dark Blue Almost Black, and Cousinhood. Director, screenwriter, and producer Manuel Martin Cuenca was born 1964in Spain.
Olimpia Melinte was born in Iasi and made her big screen debut with a part in Cele ce plutesc (Mircea Daneliuc). She went on to star in Sette opera di misericordia (Massimiliano and Gianluca de Serios), Killing Time (Florin Piersic Jr.), Selfie (Cristina Iacob), and several short films including Draft 7, My Baby, and O lume noua (Luiza Parvu).
Canibal is a Romania (Libra Film) – Spain (MOD Productiones) co-production with the collaboration of Russia and France. The film entered the festival circuit in 2013 with a participation in the International Film Festival in Torino, followed by San Sebastian IFF where it received good reviews from the international press. It was nominated eight times for the prestigious Goya Awards – the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars – and six times for the CEC (Circulo de Escritores Cinematograficos) Medals, winning ‘Female revelation of the year’ (Olimpia Melinte) and Best Film.
Transilvania Film is in charge of the film’s distribution in Romanian theaters. In its first week, cinema lovers will be able to view Canibal in Bucharest, Botosani, Brasov, Cluj, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Piatra Neamt, Pitesti, and Vaslui.
