The whole summer the Capital was a buzz of culture: theatre and film festivals and concerts including music from all genres. But the autumn is no less rich in cultural events either. The second edition of the national tour ‘Duel of violins’ is starting today, addressing the people of Bucharest as well as audiences in Galati, Iasi, Bacau, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Sibiu, Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca, HotNews.ro informs. Stradivarius and Guarneri – two famous violins – and two internationally acclaimed musicians Liviu Prunaru and Gabriel Croitoru will fight in a duel umpired by the pianist Horia Mihail until September 25. ‘The first duel of the violins in the autumn of 2011 closed in an indecisive manner, the declaration of the winner – Stradivarius or Guarneri – being postponed. Hence the necessity for a new duel. What happened in six Romanian cities in 2011 will be reedited with a new repertoire in nine cities in 2012, in the hope that the enthusiasm of the public and media manifested last year will remain the same or will even augment’, said Oltea Serban-Parau, editor-in-chief of Radio Romania Cultural and artistic director of the Radio Orchestras and Choirs. As for the tour schedule, the violinist Liviu Prunaru says: ‘All three of us will play a suite by Moskovski none of us has played before and which is also a premiere in Romania. We will also play the sonata by Prokofiev for two violins and a sonata by Haendel. In addition, each of us will present our own programmes. I will just say that I have chosen to play a few new pieces that will hopefully help me highlight the qualities of my violin. I tried to unite virtuosity with melody, romanticism with melancholy.’ Gabriel Croitoru approaches this new tour with the same joy: ‘As far as my selection of pieces is concerned, I am sure they will be appreciated by any music lover and not only, as they are works of large popularity that however combine melody and technique. I am convinced that I will manage to enhance the qualities of the Guarneri violin compared to the Stradivarius once again’. Tickets are on sale at the box offices of the concert halls that will host the recitals and also on www.bilete.ro for Bucharest.
