22 people held following fuel theft searches

Twenty-two people suspected of aggravated theft were apprehended by Dambovita prosecutors following yesterday’s police raids in Bucharest and seven counties. They will be brought to court toward being put on remand. According to Dambovita County Police officials, some of them will be investigated while free, among them four police officers, a firefighter and a gendarme.  Since Sunday, investigators have been inquiring 241 people picked up after house searches in Bucharest and the counties of  Dambovita, Prahova, Ilfov, Buzau, Constanta, Giurgiu and Ialomita, over thefts of fuel from refineries and  the Bucharest Otopeni and Baneasa airports. The incurred damage is put at nearly   RON 1.1 M. Police raids uncovered  nearly 65.000 de liters of fuel, RON 632.900, 132,125 de euro, USD 25,900, SEK (Swedish Krona) 3,600, 19 cars, several documents and written records, as well as fuel storage tanks. The police crews involved in the raids have also seized four pumps, 44 telephones and laptops, 65 hunting cartridges, two unlawfully stored hunting rifles and 195 boxes of unstamped cigarettes, the Romanian Police reported.
