Romania made this year almost 27 million tones of cereals, exceeding 1.4 tons per capita and registering nine historic records, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Petre Daea stated on Friday at a review conference.

“It’s the first time when encounter these figures. We have nine historic records and the crops where these records were registered are the following: wheat, rapeseed, peas, barley, sunflower, soy, corn, potatoes and grapes (…) I would say that the grape production was also secured by the anti-hail system that functioned this year,” Daea said.

He mentioned that all record productions of farmers benefited from the state support, who granted subsidies in due time, but also benefited from favorable climate conditions.

The Agriculture Minister mentioned that in Romania might rank first in the EU regarding sunflower and corn crops, not just in terms of the cultivated land, but also of production. He voiced regret that currently in Romania there are no sufficient pigs to consume a good part of the cereals obtained for animal food, so farmers earn more.

Romania’s corn grain harvest exceeded 14.5 million tones this year, the average production accounting for almost 6 tones per hectare, the Agriculture Minister recently told AGERPRES.

“There are still lands to cultivate in Transylvania area, but the average corn production won’t be influenced. It’s the biggest ever obtained: 5,800 kilograms per hectare, almost 6 tones, and, certainly, it will be Romania’s biggest total production of corn grain,” the Agriculture Minister said.

Over the past 10 years, the land cultivated with corn situated between 2.3 and 2.7 million hectares, with one year – 20101- when the surface exceeded 2.1 million hectares at national level.

The sunflower harvest also registered a record production of 3.167 million tones in 2017, with a 2,725 kilogrames per hectare.

Romania obtained this year another two historic records, one for wheat, a harvest of over 10 million tons, and the other one for rapeseed, where the production was 1.7 million tons.

According to the data of the National Institute of Statistics (INS), in 2016, Romania was the biggest sunflower producer in the European Union, ranking 15th in wheat production, but this year it could rank first in Europe with two productions, corn with 14.5 million tones and sunflower, where the record is 3,167 million tons.
