Divan Film Festival, the only Romanian festival dedicated to the Balkan movie and culinary art, returns this year with the 8th edition, which will be held between August 18 and 26, at Craiova and Port Cultural Cetate, in the Dolj County.
While the previous edition was focused on the urban stories from Balkans, the theme of this year’s Film and Culinary Art Tasters’ Divan is love. Far from the stereotypes imposed by any American love story, the Balkan love is rarely touched by the monotony of perfection, and the filmmakers of this European corner are renowned for their original manner or approaching this theme. Poetry, great gestures, searches, melodrama, tales, all of them find their place in the movies selected for this edition by the Artistic Director of Divan Film Festival, Catalin Olaru, and by Massimiliano Narduli, in charge with the short film section.
Catalin Olaru is film criticist, a member of the Romanian Filmmakers Union and of FIPRESCI (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique), winner of the first “Alex Leo Serban” scholarship for film criticism, and Artistic Director of HipTrip Travel Film Festival.
“When you say Balkans, you are automatically thinking at war and death, at uprooted families and weeping with hiccups. This year, Divan Film Festival aims to prove that people also love each other in Balkans, they are not only ripping and hating each other. We chose to pay a tribute to love with new movies, most of them being screened for the first time in our country” Catalin Olaru stated.
In the seven previous editions, the festival succeeded, by the presented movies, by being attended by famous filmmakers from Romania and from other Balkan countries, by the concerts and culinary performances, but especially by the beauty of the place and of the hosts Masha and Mircea Dinescu, not only to promote Romanian movie and cinematographic cooperation in the Balkan region, but also to become known as a cultural event with a unique ambiance.
“All I need is love, all we need is love. Balkan Love is more than a theme or the name of this editions, Balkan Love is a state of mind” says Massimiliano Narduli, Divan Film Festival selector.
Divan Film Festival is an annual event organized by Fundatia pentru Poezie “Mircea Dinescu” (“Mircea Dinescu” Foundation for Poetry – e.n.).
