PM Ponta says the President does not want to resign because ‘he fears justice.’
President Traian Basescu on Thursday retorted to the Parliament’s declaration calling on him to resign, saying it is justice intimidation. ‘We are talking about a declaration of Parliament that takes over verbatim the allegations of the Bercea clan and that rules before justice. In my opinion, what Parliament did is very serious, an instance of justice intimidation, because the entire declaration is supported only by allegations and video excerpts offered by the Bercea clan,’ Basescu said at the Henri Coanda Airport before leaving for Belgium.
He added that by the declaration it passed, Parliament fraternised with the Bercea clan. ‘I say it fraternised with the Bercea clan because the declaration is copied from and impregnated by the opinions voiced by Antena 3, the clan’s representatives, while generally presenting the ‘realities’ of the Bercea clan,’ said Basescu.
He pointed out that the statement of the director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) indicates that the clan had been in the crosshairs of SRI since 2001. ‘Nobody has noticed two fundamental things, I say: first of all the fact that for the first time the members of the clan, starting with its leader, have been indicted under my term in office; secondly, nobody takes into consideration the points of view of the accused, and everything is premised on the allegations and evidence presented by the clan, while thirdly everybody ignores the fact that my brother blew the whistle on the blackmail last year and this year as well,’ said Basescu.
Ponta: Had Morar still been DNA chief, Basescu would have had no problems
Prime Minister Victor Ponta said Wednesday that President Traian Basescu had no problems as long as Daniel Morar was chief prosecutor of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA). ‘As long as Daniel Morar was chief of the DNA, Mr President Basescu stayed calm. Nothing would have ever happened to his brother Mircea Basescu, Blejnar or others(…),’ Ponta told Romania TV private broadcaster commenting on the refusal of President Basescu to step down despite the scandal.
On the other hand, Ponta also told RTV that there is a recently issued ruling of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR), which could allow President Traian Basescu to be investigated even during his term in office, mainly referring to the Nana case. Ponta added that Traian Basescu, although he has a few more months of his term left, does not want to resign because ‘he fears justice.’
‘Basescu to lead the party created after PNL-PDL merger’
Moreover, the Prime Minister stated that the new political entity to result form a merger of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) will have Traian Basescu as its new leader, after this autumn’s presidential election. ‘[…] This is the plan, to create a political party to have Traian Basescu as its leader, regardless of the result of the presidential election,’ Ponta told Romania TV private broadcaster, also adding that the Liberals don’t want this, but ‘this is the plan that they will be urged to follow.’
