BCS samples voters’ opinions on candidates in presidential elections

A poll conducted by ‘Biroul de Cercetari Sociale’ (BCS) and quoted by ‘Evenimentul zilei”, in the possibility of a Iohannis-Ponta showdown in the second round of presidential elections scheduled for this autumn, finds that the liberal president would defeat the premier at a very tight score: 50.4 pc for Iohannis and 49.6 pc for Ponta. BCS checked several variants for the second round and, in the eventuality of a duel Iohannis-Tariceanu, the acting president of PNL would win at a score of 59.5 pc to 40.5 pc. If the dispute was between Ponta and Antonescu, the result would give the PSD leader as winner with 63.5 pc to 36.5 pc.
BCS also surveyed what voters see as the main defect of the main rivals in the presidential race, Klaus Iohannis and Victor Ponta. In the case of Ponta, 9.1 pc of subjects say that he is “false, insincere,” while 8.5 pc consider him “corrupt, thief.” Iohannis, too, is perceived as corrupt by 4.2 pc of respondents. In the case of the PNL leader, 2.2 pc of subjects dislike him for belonging to a national minority, but 2.6 pc appreciate him for being an ethnic German.
Both PSD and PNL leaders are seen as “capable, smart” and “serious and respectable” by their voters. At the top of the list of qualities given by the BCS survey for Iohannis stands the aptitude of “good organizer”, which is absent from Ponta’s description. On the other hand, the premier is seen as “ambitious” and “good orator” – the latter quality being absent from the profile of the Sibiu mayor.
BCS also evaluated the perception of other candidates in the presidential elections. The biggest defect of Cristian Diaconescu is that he is an “opportunist” (3.9 pc of subjects) and the main quality is being “diplomat” (5 pc). Predoiu is seen as “intelligent” by 2.1 pc, while 4.4 pc believe that the former minister of Justice is corrupt. The BCS poll was conducted on July 3-12, at the order of the People Movement’s Foundation, on 1,272 subjects interviewed at home, and has an error margin of 2.8 pc.
