The lawmaker tendered his resignation from PNL and will o become independent MP. Becali, who heard the news while in Dubai, says he contemplates not coming back to Romania.
MP George Becali was handed a three year suspended sentence yesterday in a confinement case, with the High Court five-judge panel ruling similar sentences against his bodyguards as well, Mediafax reports. The court issued the three year suspended sentence, with Becali having to abide by several rules for a period of eight years under the probation service in his domicile area. According to the quoted source, the court also ruled that George Becali shall lose his right to vote during the said interval, yet not during the probation period, which means the Steaua FC owner will remain an MP.
Shortly after the sentence was made public, Becali annnounced his resignation from the National Liberal Party (PNL), which he registered with before the legislative election last year. The information was confirmed by PNL leader Crin Antonescu, who pointed out that the businessman will from now on be an independent MP. PNL spokesman Mihai Voicu, said that even if Becali had not resigned, he would have no longer been a PNL member under the party statute.
In the wake of learning about the sentence, Gigi Becali said: “There’s no way I’d go back! It’s a matter of principles we are talking here!” realitatea.net reported Gigi Becali to have told the TV channel. “Unless the state changes, I’m not interested. It’s not the winner who’s at stake here, the focus is on what the Romanian country stands to lose. It’s about the judiciary. How come they sentence me? It’s a decision I will take together with my family (whether or not to leave Romania for good). I want to live some place where I’m loved. (…) Romania is not a safe place. I’m embarrassed to go back to the homeland. I’m ashamed to be seen there. I will come to Romania undercover,” Becali also said.
We should mention that, in 2009, Gigi Becali allegedly demanded that his bodyguards confine the thieves who stole his car and bring them at the headquarters of the New Generation Party (PNG), with the thieves being made to write statements wherein they admitted to have stolen Becali’s Mercedes car, and vowing they would not complain to Police about their confinement. Also, a rubber bullet was fired on one of the thieves.
