BNR: Total payments denied by banks, down 35 pc in March


The value of sums refused to be paid by commercial banks dropped in March by more than 35 pc, to RON 440 M, from RON 684 M, according to data released by the Payment Incidents Office of the National Bank of Romania. The bulk of the sums refused to payment in the third month of this year consisted in payments through promissory notes, which accounted for RON 425 M, down from RON 635 M the previous month (33 pc). The cheques turned down in March amounted to a total sum of RON 15 M, a much smaller sum than the previous month, when banks rejected cheques with a cumulated value of RON 49.6 M. In 2013, the value of payments made with debit instruments rejected by banks was RON 696 M. Meanwhile, it advanced to a maximum of RON 1.17 bln in May 2013, but later if gradually diminished, according to data provided by the Payments Incident Office. The number of payment incidents slightly increased in March 2014 against the previous month to 9,960, from 9,576.
