Bribe attempt in the government. Minister Dan Sova files complaint at DNA Bribe attempt in the government. Minister Dan Sova files complaint at DNA
Minister Delegate, Dan Sova, filed a complaint at DNA (National Anticorruption Directorate) against a businessman from Timisoara for attempting to bribe him at a hotel in Beijing, in exchange for several CNADNR (Romanian National Company of Motorways and National Roads) contracts.
“About one month ago, upon my return from China, I filed a criminal complaint at DNA against the representative of a large company, who tried to bribe me for a stretch of highway,” the Minister Delegate for Infrastructure and Foreign Investments stated.
Sova added that the company was rather large and it had concluded previous contracts with CNADNR in the last ten years.
According to the minister, the businessman was part of a delegation that accompanied the government delegation to Beijing. Dan Sova emphasized there is a witness, in the form of a CNADNR Board official.
The man from Timisoara allegedly attempted to bribe Sova in exchange for a state contract to build a highway.
Sova did not reveal the businessman’s name, but mentioned he was part of a delegation of business men who accompanied the government delegation to China, and “had had previous contracts with CNADNR, having worked in the field of highways and national roads.” Press speculations point to businessman Calin Roman. “He simply came up to me and said someone promised him to solve this contract, but first, he had to pay an amount of money that should go to me. The proposal was to give me the money directly, without middle men. When I returned on Monday, I filed a complaint to the DNA,” Sova stated for Digi 24. “I notified the prime minister immediately; I called him during the visit to China. He told me, ‘As soon as you get off the plane, you should notify DNA.’ I arrived Saturday and, on Monday, I notified DNA,” Sova explained at a press conference in Targoviste on Thursday.
Minister Dan Sova went on a visit to China in early July, together with PM Victor Ponta.
Sova’s complaint was sent to DNA and they, in turn, handed it over to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Court of Law in Bihor, legal sources stated to Mediafax.
Calin Roman, who presumably attempted to bribe Minister Dan Sova in China, is the General Manager of Selina Company Group in Oradea and owner of Beniamin Rus. He said the charges brought against him “are unjustified.” Calin Roman was unable to get in touch with.
Ponta asks all ministers to denounce corruption attempts
Prime Minister Victor Ponta in Giurgiu, on Thursday, said that he asked all Government members to notify the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) about any corruption attempt, as Minister Dan Sova had done. ‘It is my advice, to Mr. Sova and also to the other ministers, should anyone come with an offer to go straight to the DNA,’ Ponta said.
When asked if he had been informed about other corruption attempts on some ministers, the Prime Minister denied it. ‘I do not know any concrete cases to give you, it is an urge I have sent to all ministers, secretaries of state, should it be any attempt, to immediately go to the DNA,’ Victor Ponta pointed out.
