The chief of the Bucharest Gendarmerie, Eugen Meran was released from duty Friday evening by the minister of Interior, Radu Stroe, over the way he managed the crisis created by the January 2012 protests of Piata Universitatii Square, MAI officials told Mediafax. Brigadeer General Eugen Meran was appointed chief of the Bucharest Gendarmerie in November 2010, when he replaced Gavrila Pop. During the January 2012 rally, protesters clashed with gendarmes at, and around the Piata Universitatii Square. Colonel Mircea Olaru, the general inspector of the Romanian Gendarmerie announced Saturday that the Military Court of Appeals has been notified about the case in which an officer physically assaulted a young man during last year’s protests, and the victim filed a complaint too. The gendarme was identified from the reports of his fellow officers, which were with him when he hit Ionut Sandru, who was already lying on the ground, and broke his leg. The officer was also identified in the video images recorded during the protest.
