Bucharest to host WTA tournament next year




The Ministry of Youth and Sport’s (MTS) budget has been supplemented with RON 1.1 M, the money set to be used for the payment of a tax to the Women’s Tennis Association, in view of Romania hosting an international WTA tournament next year, Mediafax informs. ‘Prosport’ daily recently announced that the WTA tournament that should have taken place in Budapest will be replaced by a competition hosted by Bucharest, the arrangements being done in proportion of 99 per cent according to sources from the Romanian Tennis Federation, the Federation relying on government help in this sense. According to the sources, Simona Halep, winner of the Budapest tournament, was among those who lobbied for the adoption of this unusual decision. Halep took part in talks at the government in this sense. The tournament will take place on July 8-14, immediately after the end of Wimbledon.
Simona Halep was the revelation of women’s tennis this year, winning 6 international tournaments and being 11th in the world standings.
