CFR has serious delays of its rail overhaul programme for approximately 8,000 of the 10,700 km of rail it operates, as it succeeds in restoring only 10 km each year, according to Jean Nicolaos, director of Strategy and International Relations of the Company.”Unfortunately, we have big delays in the overhaul programme, which keeps the network alive. If we were restoring about 300 km a year until 1989, now the lack of funds allows us to revamp only 10 km a year, which is insufficient. Without overhauls, we must enforce speed restrictions,” Nicolaos said yesterday at the National Construction Conference ‘Gala Business Construct,’ quoted by Mediafax. According to the same source, passenger trains currently run at an average commercial speed of 46 km/h and freight trains at 23 km/h. The company wants to complete the restoration of the northern segment of Corridor IV by 2020 and partly modernise the southern segment, with a total financial effort estimated at some EUR 7 bln, also including European money. On the other hand, CFR also plans to restore the train stations of all county seat towns. “We think about promoting even high-speed lines, because Romania cannot remain an isolated island with this regard,” the CFR official added. CFR SA had previously announced that the overhaul of the 8,000 km would require investments exceeding EUR 10 bln.
Comarnic-Brasov motorway constructor
The National Company of Motorways and National Roads (CNADNR) is waiting, during the next two weeks, the final offers from the three investors interested by the construction of the Comarnic-Brasov motorway and estimates that it will designate the winner at the end of October. One of the four pre-qualified investors has withdrawn and, in the competitive dialogue phase, CNADNR held 12-13 rounds of talks with each company that remained in the race, CNADNR general manager Narcis Neaga informed yesterday during the same meeting. “In 2016, the motorway will be open to traffic. I do not know if completely,” he added. For the Comarnic – Brasov motorway segment, the competitive dialogue preselection offers were submitted in February, with China Communications Construction company and the associations Spedition UMB-Tehnostrade, Vinci – Strabag – Aktor and Impregilo – Salini being on the list
Neaga did not say what company or consortium withdrew from the selection process. CNADNR previously announced that, since the beginning of the competitive dialogue, during May-June, China Communications Construction has announced its withdrawal.
