Code Red for flooding on three rivers

Gilort, Lotru and Oltet Rivers, running through three counties of the southern Oltenia region, are under a Code Red warning for flooding, issued by the National Institute for Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) on Tuesday, valid until 11:00 pm (Romania’s time), Agerpres informs. According to hydrologists, in the interval 02:15 am -11:00 pm, following the heavy rainfalls over the past few hours and the ones forecast, there will be significant overflows on slopes, torrents, streams and fast flow and river level increases past the danger quotas on the Gilort River upstream of the Tg Carbunesti locality (Gorj County), on Lotru River (Valcea County), on the upper course of Oltet River and on its tributary Cerna (Gorj and Valcea Counties). The warning could be updated depending on the hydro-meteorological phenomena evolution.
Also yesterday was extended the orange code for flooding issued at the beginning of this week for the rivers of 9 counties, where local inundations can occur, because of torrents on hill slopes and flash-floods. The warning is valid since yesterday, 1.00 pm, until today, 2.00 pm, for rivers in the hydrographic basins Desnatui, Jiu, Olt, Vedea, Arges and Ialomita. Weather services also extended until yesterday night, at 10.00 pm, the yellow code for rain and wind in the counties of Dambovita, Teleorman, Arges, Olt, Valcea, Sibiu, Alba and Cluj. The 8 counties under yellow code could be subject to showers, lightning and wind gusts.
Problems throughout the country
Meanwhile the country suffers the effects of the rain that fell these days. At Novaci, Gorj County, hundreds of residents were evacuated as a 6 m high flash-flood hit the town and also severed two national roads: DN 65C and DN 7 A. In the same region, the Gilort River soared above the inundation level. The prefect of Gorj County said that an alert was issued for Novaci and dozens of firefighters, police officers and gendarmes were mobilized. The evacuees were sheltered at the local gym and high-school. The evacuation was coordinated by the Special Actions Service, because many residents did not want to leave their homes. Premier Victor Ponta was expected yesterday in Gorj, to assess the effects of floods.
