Code yellow of snowfall and wind in more than 20 counties

Meteorologists have issued a code yellow warning of snowfall and wind for several counties in the west, center, south and east of the country.

From Sunday, at 20.00 to Monday, at 11.00, generally significant quantities of snow will predominate and a consistent layer of snow will be deposited locally, a code yellow of snowfall being in force in the counties: Caras-Severin, Arges, Teleorman, Olt, Dolj, Valcea, and in the mountain areas of the counties Mehedinti, Gorj, Hunedoara, Sibiu, Alba, Brasov, Dambovita and Prahova.

On Monday, from 05.00 to 22.00, snowfall will gradually predominate and wind will have strong intensity, with gust speed in general of 65… 75 km/h, causing blizzard and low visibility, in the counties Galati, Vrancea, Buzau, Braila, Ialomita, Calarasi, Constanta and Tulcea.

A rainfall and strong wind warning is also in force from Saturday at 16.00 to Monday at 22.00.

Within the above mentioned time span, rainfall will gradually expand starting with the western regions and covering most of the country. In the southern half of the country and in the mountain areas, water quantities of 10… 15 l/sqm will be accumulated, and 30… 35 l/sqm will be accumulated in isolation, according to the meteorologists.

According to ANM, rainfall will predominate in Dobrogea until Monday morning (January 22), while in Banat, Crisana, Southern Oltenia and Southeastern Muntenia, there will be mixed precipitations. In the other regions, and also in the south and southeastern regions on Monday (January 22), there will be snowfall and a new layer of snow will be deposited. The wind will have temporary intensifications in the west and south of the territory, with speeds of 45….55 km/h, and of 60…70 km/h on the mountain peaks.

In the southeastern regions, the wind will continue to intensify also on Monday night to Tuesday (January 22/23), dispersing the snow.

 

Bucharest Municipality establishes a command body on the weather. Firea: 250 machines are ready to intervene

 

Meteorologists announced that there will be snowfall in Bucharest on Sunday evening and on Monday morning; Bucharest is under a weather alert, announced the ANM Director Gabriela Bancila at the Winter Command of the Bucharest Municipality. Gabriela Firea says that 250 machines are ready to intervene.

“No abundant precipitations are indicated in Bucharest, and the forecast mentions that precipitations will appear also in the Bucharest area during the night, as rain and sleet; in the morning and tomorrow, in the first half of the day, there will be snow. Tomorrow, the wind will gradually intensify, reaching the maximum speed of 40-45 km/h, mainly in the Northeastern and Eastern Bucharest, which is why the expected average snow thickness is 6-8 cm, and 8-10 cm in isolation” stated the ANM Director Gabriela Bancila at the meeting held at the Bucharest City Hall.

The General Mayor asked for a more efficient intervention, especially around schools, hospitals and public institutions. Gabriela Firea also asked the administrators of the buildings to clean the perimeter in front of the buildings.

“I ask to all the sanitation operators that have a contract with the district city halls to act with seriousness in this evening, including with preventive treatments. (…) There will be 250 machines on the streets. I announce all the people in Bucharest that if they need help, they can call to 0800800868, which is available non-stop, answering to all the requests” Gabriela Firea stated at the meeting.

Bucharest Mayor asked to the Bucharest Transport Autonomous Administration (RATB) to remove the snow from the tram stations, mentioning that the social care departments have more than 700 accommodation seats for homeless people; those who will refuse to go to a social house will receive hot meal and clothes.

 

Snowfall and blizzard are announced in 22 counties stating from Sunday evening. CNAIR’s recommendations to the drivers

 

“Taking into account the weather information issued by ANM, which announces a Code yellow of significant quantities of snow and strong wind, causing blizzard (low visibility)”, the National Company for Road infrastructure Administration 9CNAIR) recommends drivers to travel only if it is absolutely necessary and to adjust their speed to the traffic conditions.

“All the Regional Departments of the Company are being mobilized to intervene in order to ensure safe road traffic where required. Also, the Regional Departments where the weather phenomena are moderate will help those facing extreme phenomena, bringing the machines they will be needed” reads the release.

According to CNAIR, no section of any national road or motorway was closed or with difficult traffic on Sunday at 12.30, due to weather phenomena in Romania.

“We urge drivers again to drive cautiously, to adjust speed to the traffic conditions, to travel only if their cars are properly equipped for winter conditions and to get informed in advance on the traffic conditions in the transited areas” CNAIR mentions.
