Corlatean is not interested by the position of European commissioner

The Romanian minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean explained yesterday in the show “Punctul de Intalnire” aired Sunday evening by Antena 3 that he wants to finalise his mandate of minister and a possible candidacy for the position of European commissioner is out of question. “I noticed a series of slightly serious comments made by ephemeral politicians. Being a minister of Foreign Affairs is a very honouring position, which I try to do at the highest level, I want to conclude my mandate successfully, I have targets which I want to meet. I told the premier that I am not interested by the mandate of European commissioner. I believe that some continuity is necessary, along with a very intense activity. I think a very good team is needed at the ministry,” Corlatean explained, quoted by antena3.ro. Also Sunday, MEP Cristian Preda said during a press conference at Alba Iulia that Victor Ponta wants to appoint Mircea Geoana as European commissioner in order to get rid of a competitor for the presidential elections inside PSD. “(…) it is absolutely inacceptable, instead of supporting Dacian Ciolos, who had a very good mandate, Ponta wants to place someone who already compromised himself, Mr. Geoana, in the European Commission. We are obviously against this move. We believe that the position of European commissioner representing Romania must not be a consolation prize or the object of a political barter in PSD that would put Ponta at advantage in the competition over who is the presidential candidate of the socialists,” Preda said, quoted by Mediafax. The previous day, the MEP said that, after a very good European commissioner representing Romania, Dacian Ciolos, “which PSD does not support anymore,” this position is disputed now by Corina Cretu, Titus Corlatean and Mircea Geoana.
