Chairman of Romania’s Senate discusses prospects of changing Gov’t structure with Chairman
of Austrian National Council.

President of Romania’s Senate Crin Antonescu on Monday, in Vienna, met Chairman of the Federal Council of the Republic of Austria Michael Lampel during the official visit he is currently paying to Vienna, at the invitation of his Austrian counterpart. Mr Harald Himmer, Vice-Chairman of the National Council, also attended the above-mentioned meeting, informs a press release quoted by Agerpres. The talks mainly referred to the Romanian-Austrian bilateral cooperation in politics and economy as well as the subjects of mutual interest on the regional and European agenda, such as the strategy of the European Union for the Danube region, the enlargement of the European Union to the Western Balkans, the Black Sea cooperation, the support to the European route of the countries in the eastern neighbourhood. ‘The Austrian investors in the Romanian economy are a successful chapter for the relations between the two countries and the high-level political dialogue that has been conducted lately reflects the excellent stage of our relations,’ said the President of the Senate. Moreover the Romanian side added that Austria was second in the classification of the volume of foreign investments in Romania, with investments in key fields such as banking and oil, in transports, tourism, wood processing as well as in other important branches of economy.
In his turn the Chairman of the upper chamber of the Austrian Parliament congratulated Romania for the economic growth registered in 2013 and for the way in which it overcame the economic crisis and also discussed the healthy bank policies that generated a positive impact on economy. The sides also talked about the competences of the two chambers of the Austrian Parliament and of Romania’s Parliament as well as the debates in the two countries on the two-chamber system.
Olso on Monday, Crin Antonescu had a meeting with Chairperson of the National Council of the Republic Austria Barbara Prammer, with whom he discussed the political situation in Romania and the prospects of changing the governmental structure. ‘The Chairman of Romania’s Senate gave details of the political situation in Romania and the prospects of changing the governmental structure. As a reply the Chairperson of the Austrian National Council emphasized the particularly important part played by Parliament, as the main judge, in making decisions referring to the future of the country,’ reads a release issued by the Senate. According to the release, during the meeting Crin Antonescu emphasized the excellent stage of the Romanian-Austrian bilateral political, economic and cultural relations and mentioned the important presence of Austrian investors in Romania and their positive impact on jobs and on this country’s economy. The release informs that the discussions revealed the mutual interest in the consolidation of the relations between the two parliaments, in specialist commissions and friendship groups. Antonescu welcomed the presence in the Romanian delegation of Conservative Senator Vasile Nistor, head of the Romania-Austria parliamentary friendship group, and voiced confidence that the dialogue between the two friendship groups would soon be resumed.
Barbara Prammer explained that all the procedure stages were covered with a view to creating again the friendship groups in the Austrian Parliament, as a consequence of the parliamentary election that was held last year. The head of the group with Romania in the Austrian Parliament will soon be elected so that contacts at this level will be established in a short time. President of Romania’s Senate Crin Antonescu pays an official visit to the Republic of Austria at the invitation of Mr Michael Lampel, Chairman of the Austrian Federal Council.
