Culture minister wants Romanian culture unpetrified

At the Culture Ministry-organized  Romanian Culture Day event at the National Museum of Art of Romania, Minister Daniel Barbu  made the case for a lightening up of the Romanian culture and its transformation into a  public asset available to the young generation as well. Attendees at Tuesday’s Romanian Culture Day celebration event included Romanian MPs, members of the diplomatic corps, academicians and cultural figures. The event program included visiting  two of the exhibitions hosted by the National Museum of  Art of Romania – “The National Myth. The Contribution of arts to defining the Romanian identity  1830-1930” and “Testimonies. Arges Monastery Frescos “ – as well as a recital performed by violinist Alexandru Tomescu.According to Mediafax, in the Culture minister’s view, it is the “crisis” that generated the unpetrifying trend of the Romanian culture. “By framing our artistic creation, we isolate  it from the society it lives in, which has demands of a different nature (…) I believe that this isolation of culture must suffer the  rigors of the crisis, and, as long as  cultural projects will be made, we should transform culture into a public asset,” minister Daniel Barbu also said. Speaking of globalization and its effects,  Ionel Haiduc, president of the Romanian Academy, outlined that the major risk is  “to lose national identity and continuity defined by culture, language, traditions and spirituality”.  A 2010 Parliament-passed law  declared January 15, the birthday of Romanian national poet Mihai Eminescu, as the National Culture Day.
