The first Patriot missile defence system will arrive in Romania in the second half of 2019, following to become fully operational in 2020, the Defence minister Mihai Fifor said on Saturday in Arad.
The minister stressed that by allocating this year 2 pct of the gross domestic product to the Defence sector, out of which 48 pct for endowment, Romania has demonstrated that it honors its commitments as a NATO member state, as well as a U. S. strategic partner.
“Last week we have got the Parliament’s Okay to purchase the first Patriot defence missile system, and next Wednesday we are to ink the acceptance letter, basically the contract by which the U. S. Administration is selling to the Romanian Government the defence missile system. We are talking about seven systems, for both the Air Forces and the Land Forces, this year being to pay for the first system. Moreover, in the Wednesday’s gov’t sitting we hope to get approved the Government Resolution’s draft law for the Piranhas 8×8 armoured wheeled vehicles in partnership with the General Dynamics U. S. company, vehicles that are to support the relaunch of the Romanian defence industry, because starting with the number 31, these 8×8 wheeled vehicles will be manufactured at the Bucharest Mechanical Plant (UMB). In other words, we meet our targets we have assumed and proposed for this year and prepare ourselves for the next year to continue the unfolding of the other major Army endowment programmes,” Mihai Fifor asserted.
