Romanian Minister of Defence Mihai Fifor on Wednesday had a meeting with his American counterpart James Mattis, in the context of the meeting of Defence Ministers from the NATO members states held in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday, reads a release of the Ministry of National Defence (MApN).
The two officials discussed the strategic priorities of cooperation between Romania and the United States of America in the security and defence field, the recent developments in the security situation in the Black Sea region, as well as the implementation of the resolution adopted at the NATO Summit in Warsaw regarding the strengthening of NATO’s position for discouragement and defence, in continuing the dialogue initiated in September in Washington.
In respect to the Strategic Partnership with the USA, the Minister of Defence and the US Secretary discussed about the opportunities of strengthening bilateral cooperation in view of consolidating the advanced presence of the Alliance on the Eastern flank and an unitary approach to it, with emphasis on the participation of US in the initiatives concerning the Black Sea region.
“By reiterating the fact that Romania remains a solid partner, predictable and trustful of the USA, Mihai Fifor underscored the significance of the US commitment in the region and the importance of its contribution in implementing the adjusted allied presence in the Black Sea basin,” reads the MApN release.
Moreover, another important topic on the agenda was cooperation between the armed forces of Romania and the USA in Afghanistan, during the NATO mission “Resolute Support.” Minister Fifor showed that Romania respects its commitment to continue its significant participation in this mission and thus contribute to the safety and stability of Afghanistan.
Mihai Fifor underscored that the meeting with his American counterpart “is a clear proof of the excellent relations of collaboration that we managed to strengthen this year with the USA.”
“On this occasion, we sent the message that Romania maintains its commitments with NATO and remains a trustful ally and stable in the Black Sea region. Moreover, we had the special pleasures of addressing the defence secretary the official invitation to participate in the Bucharest 9 (B9) event that will take place next year in Romania. The participation of the USA in the meeting will for sure bring more substance to the discussions ahead of the preparations for the NATO Summit in July 2018,” the Minister of Defence specified.
Black Sea security, US – Romania military cooperation in Afghanistan on the agenda of the bilateral talks
“On this occasion, the dialogue initiated in September in Washington continued with a focus on the strategic priorities of the cooperation between Romania and the US in the security and defence area, the developments of the security situation in the Black Sea region, as well as the implementation of decisions adopted at the NATO Summit in Warsaw regarding the strengthening of NATO’s deterrence and defence posture,” Fifor wrote on his Facebook page.
He mentioned, in regards to the Strategic Partnership with the US, that he talked with the US official about opportunities to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in order to consolidate NATO’s advanced presence on the Eastern Flank and its unitary approach, with an emphasis on the US participation in the initiatives carried out in the Black Sea region.
“By reiterating that Romania remains a solid, predictable and trustworthy partner of the US, I underscored the significance of the US commitment in the region and the importance of its contribution in implementing the allied adapted presence at the Black Sea,” Fifor mentioned.
The Defence Minister added that an important topic on the discussion agenda was the cooperation between Romania’s and US’s armed forces in Afghanistan, within NATO’s Resolute Support mission.
“We showed that Romania observes its commitment to continue its significant participation in this mission and contribute, thus, to the security and stability of Afghanistan,” Fifor informed.
He brought to mind that the meeting with Defence Secretary James Mattis took place just one month and a half after the official visit he paid to Washington in September.
“It’s a clear proof of the excellent collaboration relations that we managed to intensify this year with the US. On this occasion we conveyed that Romania maintains the commitments took on within NATO and remains a credible and stable allied in the Black Sea region,” the Defence Minister stated.
