Deputy under investigation for electoral bribe


The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has petitioned for approval to remand deputy Florin Popescu (People’s Movement Party) in custody on suspicion of having requested approx. 70 tons of poultry worth over RON 400,000 from a company manager in order to distribute it to citizens as part of the June 2012 electoral campaign, a DNA press release issued Wednesday notes. “Based on the analyzed evidence (…), it appears that in 2012 the defendant Popescu Florin Aurelian, through use of influence and office in his capacity as chairman of the Dambovita County branch of a certain party, requested between 50,000 and 60,000 grill poultry (60 to 80 tons worth over RON 400,000) from a company manager in order to distribute it to citizens as part of the campaign held in Dambovita county for the local elections of June 2012,” DNA stated in the petition filed with the General Prosecutor. During the aforementioned time, the deputy was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (PDL). In the 2008/2012 term, he was leader of the PDL Dambovita branch and Dambovita County Council Chairman. In December 2012, Florin Popescu was appointed deputy in Dambovita. He resigned from PDL in early February 2014 and subsequently joined PMP.
