Electronic prescription, mandatory from January 1

From January 1 onward, doctors must dispense electronic prescriptions only, with the standard prescription papers no longer acknowledged and paid for by medical insurance houses, the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) announced. Doctors however complain about their inability to procure the necessary equipment, with many doctors, most of whom working in hospitals, yet to pay for the electronic signature, which costs RON 400.“The personal and non-personal contribution special medicine forms will only be dispensed if they were prescribed until Dec 31, 2012 inclusively.  According to the law in effect, all the medical service suppliers must have aligned to the implementation of electronic prescription by Dec 31, 2012. The use of other forms make the users accountable to law,” according to the CNAS, which appointed a week ago commission overseeing the program, chaired by CNAS Head Doctor Marius Filip and made up of Adrian Cazachevici, counselor, IT Department; Lucian Medves, Director, IT Department; and Anca Alexandrescu, counselor, Monitoring –Control Department.According to the CNAS, since the program was launched, on July 2, 2012, there have been prescribed more than three million prescriptions online.The system offers reports whereby the CNAS checks whether doctor’s prescriptions are also found at the pharmacies dispensing compensated medicines. The electronic prescriptions come to doctors’ help, too, as they reduce the number of prescription errors, the CNAS says.The project costs RON 48,549,000 of which non-redeemable funding comes to RON 31,792,000. By June 2012, RON 45,063,835.80 (including VAT) had been injected into the system and its ancillary services.
