Ion Sandu, Director of the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), told Government’s winter command Saturday that almost all of western Romania will be icy starting Sunday night, and, from noontime today, a fog advisory for the entire southeastern part of the country. Sandu also said that snow will be back after Jan 18. ,,The weather will be as follows: temperatures below 0 tonight, up to -18C in the low-lying areas, which means we expect wet roads to get icy in the morning, with an ice layer to surely cover the roads. Tomorrow night, a rather unseasonable warm front will make its presence felt in the western part, with glazed frost yet almost sure to be the case over almost the entire western part of the country Sunday night into Monday morning,” Sandu said, who added that fog advisories will be in effect into Monday noontime and from Monday onward there will be no more fog or block frost given the “rather high” temperatures.“Therefore, the National Meteorological Administration will issue county-level fog advisories, as it happened before, and fog advisories are sure to be issued into noontime Monday across the south and east of the country. Beyond noon on Monday, until Jan 17, there will be no fog or glazed frost as temperatures will be fairly high, and scant rain will also be the case in western Romania and elsewhere in the country too,” the ANM director said.Sandu said that “substantial” snowfalls would be back from Jan 18 on. ANM also issued a fog advisory in effect from yesterday morning 07:25 to 10:25 am for several counties in southern Romania – Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ialomita, Calarasi and Ilfov – the corresponding European and national roads, and the capital city. Saturday’s snowfall prompted Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu demanded that snow-clearing operators clean the sidewalks and secondary streets. Over 500 fines were issued during Saturday by police roadblocks aimed at checking vehicle cold season equipping. Unfavorable weather conditions Saturday slowed down car traffic throughout Ilfov Co, prompting traffic police to recommend drivers to adjust speed to road and traffic conditions. Four road accidents happened in Ilfov Co. until noon Saturday due to drivers failing to adjust vehicle speed to road conditions.
