Former Interior Minister and Deputy Premier Gabriel Oprea (UNPR) and Senator Doina Tudor (PNL) showed up at the Senate’s Judiciary Commission on Tuesday in order to read their case files and be heard by the members of the commission.

The members of the commission approved the prosecution of Gabriel Oprea. The Senate’s plenum will most like vote on Wednesday.

“As Interior Minister I had protection from SPP and a car taken from another institution on the basis of a bailment agreement, a car that was breaking down from time to time. A subunit – Acvila – was re-established from scratch within the Intelligence and Internal Protection Directorate (DIPI). In this context, featuring many vulnerabilities and life-threatening risks for the leadership of the Interior Ministry, including for myself, DIPI legally purchased an auto vehicle. Tomorrow I will say more within the Senate’s plenum,” Gabriel Oprea said.

Likewise, he said that not one but 5,000 cars were bought during his term in office, referring to the police cars that were procured.

When asked whether he had a whirlpool bathtub in his Interior Ministry office, Gabriel Oprea stopped making any statements.

Former Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea is accused of malfeasance in office in the case in which former DIPI Director Nicolae Gheorghe is involved.

Senator Anca Doina Tudor is accused of complicity to passive bribery in the case in which former Financial Supervisory Authority Vice President George Daniel Tudor is involved. Prosecutors claim that in March-May 2013, Doina Tudor indirectly helped “defendant Tudor Daniel George receive the sum of EUR 200,000, in return for helping an insurance company that had been the target of several controls.”
