France: Romanian film director Cristian Mungiu wins prize for cultural diversity

Film director Cristian Mungiu won the prize for cultural diversity 2013, which was awarded by the French coalition for cultural diversity and rewards personalities and associations or events that favour the access to culture and promote all forms of cultural expression, informs the portal toutelaculture.com on Friday. ‘Being a defender of cultural diversity, Cristian Mungiu plays an active part in Romania in creating a system meant to support filmmaking. Recently, together with other filmmakers, he has defended in Europe the cultural exception that was contested by the free trade agreement [which is being negotiated for] between the European Union and the US,’ said the organizers. Mungiu got several prizes at the International Film Festival in Cannes: in 2007 he was rewarded with the Palme d’Or, for his second film titled ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,’ and in 2012 his film titled ‘Beyond the Hills’ won the prize for best screenplay and for best actress.
