Gina Gogean for International Gymnastics Hall of Fame


Romanian gymnast Gina Gogean (ROM), winner of five Olympic medals at 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and winner of 15 World Championship medals is one of the inductees for 2013 recently announced by the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in Oklahoma, ighof.com reports.

To be inducted into the Hall of Fame the gymnast must have won an Olympic or World Championships medal, of any color, in an individual event. Following the winning of the medal, they must have demonstrated over a period of not less than 10 years a role of active participation and contribution to the sport of gymnastics, both nationally and internationally.Gina Gogean (born September 9, 1977) competed internationally in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. During her career she won an impressive number of 30 medals at Olympic Games, world championships or continental championships. Her best events were the floor exercise (three-time world champion), the vault (two-time world champion) and the balance beam (1997 world champion). S

he was also an excellent all around gymnast winning several medals on this event, the European title in 1994, a silver Olympic medal (1996) and a silver medal at the 1993 World championships. She helped Romanian team win three consecutive world titles (1994, 1995 and 1997) and two Olympic team medals, a silver and a bronze (1992 and 1996), according to wikipedia.org.After retiring in 1997, Gogean was a gymnastics referee and coach in Deva.The other inductees for 2013 in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame are: Albert Azaryan (ARM), winner of four Olympic medals –three gold – in 1956 and 1960, and five time World Championship medals; Ljubov Burda (RUS), 1968 and 1972 Olympic Gold medalist and 1970 team World Champion and bronze medalist on the vault;Yuri Korolev (RUS), most decorated non-Olympic gymnast, including 13 medals – nine gold – across four World Championships (1981, ’83, ’85 and ’87).
