Harris: Over 16 pc annual trade growth rate with Romania

The annual growth rate of the trade between Romania and Great Britain is 16 percent, Martin Harris, Great Britain’s ambassador to Bucharest, said live on a TV show broadcast by Pro TV.
“I believe business relations are an area that can be further developed in the future. I am convinced we can stimulate the trade relations between Great Britain and Romania, although unfortunately so far the opportunities available here in Romania have not been well understood in Great Britain,” Harris stated. “We have many British companies active in the energy sector. In fact, the energy sectors in Romania and Great Britain are similar. In addition, we also have gas, offshore (editor’s note – wind power), and nuclear and shale gas potential. A strategic partnership was concluded between Romania and Great Britain concerning the energy sector. I am confident we can encourage the companies and investors in this field,” the ambassador noted.
He underlined that Romania poses significant interest, a “strategic and very impressive interest,” for British investors in the IT field. “It is a field that has evolved very rapidly these past four years and many British IT companies have hired hundreds of persons in Iasi, Cluj, and Bucharest because Romania has a qualified workforce; in fact, Romania has become one of Europe’s website factories. British companies are here to design websites for banks in the City of London and Premier League football clubs. In a single digital market, Romania has a considerable advantage. I am convinced that British investors will continue their involvement in this field,” Harris added.
The ambassador pointed out that one of the advantages of the Romanian IT market is its virtual infrastructure, which provides one of the highest Internet speeds in Europe.
He went on to say one of the problems investors in Great Britain have regarding Romania is related to a wrong perception of available opportunities, which is why a partnership with the Romanian – British Chamber of Commerce has been concluded, in view of hosting a series of promotional events in London.
