France celebrates on the 14th of July the values contained in its motto which lie at the heart of the French Republic. We express today our attachment to liberty, equality and fraternity and in a broader sense to the European values shared by both France and Romania.

The quality and density of our bilateral relations have been the mark of the special ties between our two countries for many decades. This year, the celebration of Bastille Day is also an opportunity to commemorate a double anniversary, the centenary of the end of the First World War and the centenary of modern Romania. Our destinies are tied today, just as they were one hundred years ago. The military mission led in Romania by General Henri Berthelot illustrates the nature of the French-Romanian friendship throughout time. Just like 100 years ago, France is involved in addressing several challenges for Europe’s future. France wishes to work closely with Romania, who will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2019. We strongly wish the Romanian Presidency to be a success and we will support it on all its dimensions and priorities: Europe of convergence, Europe of security, Europe as a global actor and Europe of shared values.

Europe is a community of values based on rule of law and democratic institutions which make it united and strong.

Promoting our common ambitions for Europe, maintaining and developing our bilateral relations, but also relearning to know each other, will be the ambition of the France-Romania Season (27 November 2018 –  14 July 2019). This Season, which will successively take place in France and in Romania, will underline the unique relationship between our two countries. It will highlight culture and contemporary creation, but also education, economy, sport and tourism.

Resolutely focused on the future, the Season will contribute to renew the image and the mutual perception of French and Romanian people. We are proud of this ambitious program which will allow both our nations to reinforce once more their ties and continue to build together promising and hopeful projects for a renewed, stronger, sovereign, united and democratic Europe.

Long live France!

Long live Romania!
