Independent deputy accuses President of breaching Constitution by supporting party, presidential candidate
Deputy Bogdan Diaconu [a former member of the ruling Social Democratic Party] asserts that President Traian Basescu breached the Constitution by openly supporting the People’s Movement Party [PMP] and its presidential candidate Elena Udrea.
‘The President didn’t say anything new. We all know he supports Mrs Udrea, we all know that the idea of founding the party led by Mrs. Udrea [PMP] came from President Basescu. It’s an assumed thing. In my opinion as a jurist, I think it’s a breach of the Constitution, because still within his term, so not being a private citizen, he assumes and politically supports one party and one candidate in the presidential election,’ Diaconu said in a press conference on Thursday.
Asked whether the United Romania Party which he intends to found is going to support any of the candidates announced so far, Diaconu answered: ‘They’re all one and the same, and unfortunately I don’t see any option for the presidential election.’
President Traian Basescu had declared in a TV broadcast on Wednesday evening that he ‘definitely’ supports PMP’s candidate Elena Udrea.
‘I am an unreserved supporter of PMP; you clearly saw also in the elections for the European Parliament, I have not refrained from any support, and I assumed this new party, which I wish were a different thing. I definitely support this party’s candidate for president of Romania. It was Cristian Diaconescu, I supported him as long as he needed it, or until he announced that he runs as an independent candidate; from then on, my support for him could not operate anymore, as I was the one who inspired the creation of this party and also of the [People's Movement] Foundation. Today it’s Elena Udrea, I will definitely support her during the campaign, because she is PMP’s candidate,’ the president declared.
