PSD’s fate as the Romanian democratic left-wing’s sole party affects the structural balance of the political stage in Romania and because of that it concerns us all. In the following period PSD’s main problem won’t be Traian Basescu, PD-L or PNL, but PSD itself.

Any organism reproduces according to its genetic program, passing on its traits to its descendants. For a change to occur a mutating factor is needed. In what concerns PSD, it has ended up being a regional party without a territory, an army led not by general staff...

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was visiting Paris on Monday and told his French counterpart, Herve Morin, that he was concerned about the sale, a U.S. official...

KIEV - Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich pressed rival Yulia Tymoshenko to concede defeat yesterday after a narrow victory in a presidential election that could tilt the ex-Soviet state back towards Moscow. With 98.4 percent of votes counted, official figures gave ex-mechanic Yanukovich, whose party is allied to the Kremlin’s United Russia, a margin of 2.8 percentage points over firebrand Prime Minister Tymoshenko, meaning she could not overtake him. Tymoshenko, who called supporters onto the streets in 2004 to overturn a previous Yanukovich...

BNR representatives consider that this modification would give a positive signal over the Romanian economy.

Public finance minister Sebastian Vladescu considers that Romania could shift, after the next evaluation, from a stand-by loan agreement to a “precautionary” arrangement with IMF, which would demonstrated that the Romanian economy steadily recovers. However, Vladescu believes that it is too early to say if this decision can be made soon. “It is too early to say if we shall change the arrangement after the next evaluation. Hopefully, we shall shift to a precautionary agreement, because this would mean that the global economy is recovering and the...

Behind the appearance of quietness and concentration, the current Boc Government keeps analyzing the draft of the new pension law. The deadline for sending the project to Parliament has been repeatedly deferred, in spite of the IMF and World Bank request to give priority to this legislative act among the measures aimed to cope with the current economic and financial crisis. In order to appease to a certain extent this deviation from the conditions formulated by the bankers as a preamble to the financial loan granted to Romania, Premier Boc has recently “acknowledged” that the first condition for the modernization of the Romanian state is in the future law regarding pensions and salaries.

But the appearances of quietness and concentration disclose an unpredictable bitterness. The supporters of the current governmental coalition and members of the Executive overdo in connection with the fact that we have too many pensioners, while the pension budget shows a deficit....
