This year’s main fashion trends
09.02.10 | by: Ana-Maria Iancu | in: culture
From the ‘60s Pop-Art culture to ripped jeans and transparent glossy fabrics, the 2010 season in fashion encompasses them all. Inspired by recession, designers say “everything goes.”
Imagine
One of the spring 2010’s season absolute champions is the knee- high and over knee sock. Knee high socks - as well as over-the-knee and thigh high socks - are back as a trend, and the options on how to wear them are many. From the sporty to the sparkly, to layerings of socks over tights; a great pair of socks can add volumes to an outfit.

Also, as part of a design trend that looks to the future, the military outfit is back in business. Actually, the military and tribal trends collide to become this fierce fashion trend. Ancient civilizations come to life in leather tunics, metal plating, and war paint. Unequivocally fearless and with room for endless creativity, the main criteria for the modern warrior is confidence.

Reminding everyone of the “Make love not war” times, the pants are again a champ this year, and the more colourful they are, the better. From tailored trousers to skinny cigarette pants, to ripped jeans and leather leggings; over the past years pants have predominantly been worn in block colours. What’s more, they’d become something of a basic: frequently worn as a subtle item, while attention was focused on increasingly-detailed tops, jackets, dresses, and skirts. Stripes, florals, graphic prints and abstract shapes, they all meet on the fabric, combining to illustrate something bright and bold, or subtle and sophisticated. Almost anything goes when it comes to trouser prints in 2010. And cuts? Again, the choice is yours. Skinny like Balenciaga or free flowing like Roberto Cavalli are both strong styles. But the style we expect to see more of on the streets - at least more immediately - is a toned-down take on the harem pant, relaxed at the hips and tapered in to the ankles. And as they could not miss from the picture, just when you thought they would never return... ripped jeans are back. Starting in 2008 with a horde of sexed-up editorial shoots and celebrity sightings, those torn denim shorts and shredded jeans are hitting the streets. Ripped denim in 2009 is certainly sexy and revealing - possibly more than ever.

Sheer fabric is back as one of hottest 2010 fashion trends, and plenty of celebrities are wearing it. As for colours, this year, and especially the upcoming spring, green is the word.

It looks as though we’re in for a very green-based season with a wide variety being featured in the palette; though also prevalent are pinks, blues, browns and even neon green. Whilst at first glance the palette looks vast it seems to play on quite a similar set of hues, featuring mostly light & bright summery colours which try to capture a younger and a more up beat tone then the much more demure colours we saw in 2009. Also predicted is a re-occurrence of the romantic trend and inspirations taken from the Pop Art of the sixties and seventies.
