INS: Foreign tourists spent RON 4.61bn in Romania in first nine months

Almost 1.93 million foreign tourists who lodged in the first nine months of 2016 in hotels from Romania, have spent over RON 4.61 billion, on average RON 2,391.5/person, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) says in a press release remitted to AGERPRES, on Thursday.

“In the period between 1 January – 30 September 2016, the number of non-resident tourists lodged in the collective lodging structures was of 1,929 thousand, and their spendings reached in total RON 4,613.2 millions”, the press release mentions.

The main reason of non-resident tourists’ stay in Romania, during the first nine-months period, was business, more specifically attending congresses, conferences, courses, fairs, and exhibitions (56.6 pct from the total number of non-resident tourists), their spendings representing 57.3 pct of the total .

Of the total number, 43.4 pct of non-resident tourists have arrived in Romania for private reasons, of which 61.3 pct were in vacation. Travels for private reasons include vacation trips, shopping trips, or trips for cultural and sport events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religious purposes, transit, and other activities.

Also, of the total number of non-resident persons who arrived in Romania, 51.5 pct have organized their stay through tour operators, where 30.5 pct organized by themselves.

“The main transport used by the non-resident tourists to reach Romania was plane (73.6 pct of total number of non-resident tourists). Personal vehicles made up 14.3 pct, followed by coaches and buses with 10.3 pct, as well as 1.8 pct of other transport means (trains, river boats, rental cars, motorcycles, etc.)”, the quoted press release shows.

In the third quarter of this year, the number of foreign tourists in Romania is 836,400, and their spendings made up in total RON 1.85 billion.

The reasons for their visits are the same, consequently 53.3 pct of tourists arrived for business purpose, their spendings representing 57 pct of the total, and 46.7 pct on private reasons, of which 63.3 pct in vacation.
