The production of beef, pork, poultry, mutton and goat meat increased in 2013 compared to 2012 in the context of the upward trend in animal and poultry slaughtering in specialized industrial units (slaughterhouses), according to the data released on Monday by the National Statistics Institute of (INS). The production of mutton and goat meat rose by 32.8 percent to 3,206 tonnes, pork production saw an advance of 9.3 percent to 308,360 tonnes, poultry production increased by 6.4 percent to 332,871 tonnes and beef production went up by 2.2 percent to 29,338 tonnes. In 2013, the slaughter of cattle in specialized industrial units, by number of head, rose compared to the previous year by 3.6 percent, and the slaughter of pigs increased by 7.9 percent. The number of sheep and goats slaughtered in specialized industrial units advanced by 36.3 percent compared to the previous year, and the number of slaughtered poultry rose by 4.4 percent from 2012.
