INSCOP: Support for presidency – Ponta 38.7 pc, Antonescu 25 pc

National leader of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD, major at rule) Victor Ponta resulted to be preferred by 38.7 percent of the respondents to a poll asking Romanians about their favourite candidate in the presidential elections, while the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL, main opposition party) Crin Antonescu represented the choice of 25 percent of interviewed, according to an INSCOP poll released on Monday. Asked to indicate a personality, while also mentioning the political party he/she belonged to, for whom they will vote in the presidential elections, 38.7 percent of the total number of those who said they do want to vote indicated Victor Ponta (PSD), while 25 percent indicated Crin Antonescu (PNL).
According to the poll, the next in the ranking came Mihai Razvan-Ungureanu (Civic Force, FC), preferred by 14.6 percent of the respondents, followed by Catalin Predoiu (the Liberal Democratic Party – PDL, in opposition), with 9.3 percent (7.2 percent in January), Corneliu Vadim Tudor (the Greater Romania Party, PRM), with 5.1 percent, Kelemen Hunor (the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania -UDMR, part of the ruling coalition), with 3.5 percent and Dan Diaconescu (People’s Party – Dan Diaconescu – PP-DD), 3.8 percent. The question did not include such variants as ‘Other’, ‘I haven’t decided yet’, ‘I won’t go to vote’ or ‘I don’t know/I don’t want to answer.’ Yet, the poll showed that, compared with the total number of people targeted by the study, 11.8 percent chose the answer ‘Other’ to the question for whom they will vote in the presidential election, the most frequently mentioned names being Klaus Johannis, Sorin Oprescu and Calin Popescu-Tariceanu.
INSCOP also revealed the options for the second round of the presidential elections. Thus, if it comes to choosing between Victor Ponta and Crin Antonescu, the PSD leader would garner 57.5 percent of the votes, while the PNL leader would garner 42.5 percent of them. In the case of a final match-up between Sorin Oprescu and Crin Antonescu, both candidates would garner the same number of votes, i.e. 50 percent each. If the situation will be that in the second round of the presidential elections Calin Popescu-Tariceanu will run against Crin Antonescu, the former would collect 50.4 percent of the votes, while the latter would collect 49.6 percent.
The ‘Barometer-Truth about Romania’ poll was conducted by INSCOP Research, February 27-March 4, commissioned by the Adevarul daily.
