National Liberal Party (PNL, in opposition) President Klaus Iohannis attended events in the southern Arges county on Wednesday commemorating the 150th anniversary of former great Liberal leader Ion (Ionel) I.C. Bratianu.
Iohannis paid homage to the prominent Liberal figure and laid a wreath at the tomb located in the chapel on the Bratianu estate at Florica, near the county city of Pitesti.
‘I’ve come here not only to pay homage to a great politician, but also to a formidable statesman, since the memory of Ionel Bratianu today passes the boundary of the memory of our party, it is one with the history of Romania. Ionel Bratianu proved to be a great politician not only but what he said, but by what he did and this should make us ponder. (…) Today, the PNL is the one carrying on the historical tradition of the Bratianu politicians and my role is to guarantee it will stay so’, the Liberal chief said.
Also taking part in the event were local officials and several senior Liberal leaders. Senator Ion Popa, who heads the Arges Liberal branch read a message sent by the PNL honorary president Mircea Ionescu Quintus.
Ion I.C. Bratianu (1864-1927) was a PNL president, many-times prime minister of Romania, a minister and MP. Among the political initiatives he helped promote were the industrialization process, the agrarian and electoral reform, the revision of the constitution, the organization of education, and the administrative and judiciary reform.
