The ambassador of Ireland in Bucharest, Oliver Grogan presented the priorities of the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union – securing a stable financial system, economic recovery and return to economic growth. He mentioned that the Programme of the Irish presidency is “For stability, jobs and economic growth.” The event was attended by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean and by Bogdan Manoiu, presidential advisor for European Affairs.“We know that Romania and Bulgaria have strong aspirations to accede to the Schengen Space. One of the important priorities of the Irish presidency will be to address these aspirations and continue negotiations in order to reach an accord to this regard,” the diplomat stated, quoted by Mediafax, adding that talks are held in view of returning to this topic during the Council of Ministers that will be held in March.Grogan explained that Ireland is not a member ‘per se’ of the Schengen Zone, but it does its best to facilitate an accord between member states. “We can maintain a good communication line in Bucharest so the Romanian concerns are well understood by Dublin and Brussels,” he mentioned. In his address, the minister of European Affairs, Titus Corlatean said that the accession to Schengen remains a very important goal for Romania, as well as for the European Union as a whole, as Romania met the conditions for the Schengen accession. On the other hand, the Irish ambassador assured that “Romania’s concerns about structural funds and agriculture have been well understood.”The diplomat also referred to the projects of the Embassy of Ireland regarding a series of cultural events that will be organised on the occasion of the Irish presidency in Bucharest, including a large festival dedicated to St. Patrick’s Day in March.
