Former tennis great Ilie Nastase, Romania’s non-playing captain in the Fed Cup playoff, was expelled from the tie against Great Britain in Mamaia after a build-up of incidents and unsportsmanlike conduct, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said in a statement following the events on Saturday afternoon.

According to British media, Nastase engaged in verbal abuse against the umpire and two British players causing the match between Sorana Cirstea and Johanna Konta to be suspended, one day after making improper comments about Serena Williams’ pregnancy.

“Romanian Captain Ilie Nastase was removed from the court during the second rubber of the Fed Cup tie between Romania and Great Britain in Constanta. Mr Nastase was asked to leave the court by ITF Referee Andreas Egli for unsportsmanlike conduct, having already received two official warnings.

“Mr Nastase was also removed from the grounds due to his serious misconduct. His accreditation was removed and he will play no further part in the tie. The ITF has launched an investigation into this matter as well as previous comments made by Mr Nastase during the week,” ITF announced on its site.

A formal investigation is already underway into the former player’s behavior in the past two days, ITF said in the release.
