The Ministry of Economy is planning to pilot a lump sum tax for hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, cafes and bars from April until December. Official analyses indicate a 3-4 star hotel will pay about EUR 130/room/year, Sorin Parvu, Vice-President of the National Council of SMEs in Romania (CNIPMMR), said, according to realitatea.net. He pointed out that the measure was being taken at the pressure of the business environment that has been urging measures against unfair competition. ‘A tax is needed for bringing all companies operating in the same sector to the same level. It is a clear fact that not all operators pay their taxes. Although the big hotel chains are among the top Romanian companies through their turnover, they are not among the biggest tax-payers as well,’ the official further noted.
If this pilot project was introduced, the budget would collect EUR 58 M instead of EUR 39 M, which is a very big rise, he added.
