Maior: Strategic partnership with USA has a component from unseen field of intelligence services too

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) director SRI George Maior said on Monday that the security focal point of our country is given by the strategic partnership with the USA which has a visible, military element, and one less visible ‘from the unseen field of the intelligence services’. ‘Our country’s security pivot is given by the strategic partnership with the United States of America, which has a very visible military element, but there is a less visible part from the unseen field of the intelligence services, where partnership is very, very solid. Do not believe that the repeated visits by the CIA or FBI directors to Romania are purely diplomatic or out of politeness. No! Very sensitive things are tackled from the viewpoint of these interactions which very much help both Romania’s and the US national security as well on a symmetric field. I don’t agree with those who say that those are subordination relationships. We are perfectly equal – a mutually useful swap of information for both states which shapes a better image on the menaces, threats we are confronted with and which help us permanently to improve our security environment’, said George Maior in an interview with Adevarul.ro, quoted by Agerpres.
On the other hand, George Maior said he is in favour of continuing the shale gas exploitation project, pointing out that in this case, there are powerful foreign influences the Romanian state is trying to counteract. “Our country’s security pivot is given by the strategic partnership with the United States of America, which has a very visible military element, but there is a less visible part from the unseen field of the intelligence services, where partnership is very, very solid. Do not believe that the repeated visits by the CIA or FBI directors to Romania are purely diplomatic or out of politeness. No! On the other hand, SRI head criticized the Romanian political class for favoring party interests above the state. “(…) The final target of the political class should leading ahead the society, not the party. There leaders who think like that, but few. Most of them are preoccupied with their own image, with their political continuity (…)”, Maior said.
