Men’s Handball: Christian Gaudin to coach Romania


France’s Christian Gaudin is the new coach of the Romanian men’s national handball team, digi.sport informs. Aged 47, a former goalie for Istres, Creteil, Magdeburg and Saint Raphael, Gaudin won the world cup in 1995 and 2001. Gaudin coached St. Raphael in 2006 and will coach Romania during its playoff against Sweden. Romania will meet Sweden in the playoff counting for a place at the World Championship 2015, a tournament hosted by Qatar (January 17 – February 1). The first leg game will take place on June 7, 2014, and the return leg on June 15.
Romania won Group 2 in the qualifiers, with a total of 10 points, followed by Slovakia (10 pts), Italy (4 pts) and Cyprus (0 pts). Sweden was 4th in Main Group 2 at the European Championships in Denmark. Romania met Sweden last year at the Scandinavian Open 2013, in Norway, being defeated 35-29, after having a 17-15 lead at half time.
