Romanian Military Vehicle Systems (RMVS) will roll out in 2020 the first of the 400 8×8 Agilis armored carriers that will equip the Romanian army, the company said in a release on Thursday.

The Romanian-German joint venture RMVS got the Competition Council’s nod of approval at the end of last year and was entered in the Trade Register. Romarm National Company S.A. – through its subsidiary Automechanical Plant Moreni S.A. holds 50 pct of the stake of the new company based in Moreni (Dambovita County), and Germany’s Rheinmetall holds the other half.

This is the first joint-venture in the Romanian defence industry of which the Romanian state controls 50 pct. Each euro invested in the Moreni plant multiplies in the vertical and horizontal business line. This is money that stays in the Romanian economy, as do the intellectual property rights to the product, since it is developed in Romania, RMVS managing director Karl-Ulrich Zulauf said in the release.

The 8×8 Agilis armored carrier, based on a Romanian-German research solution, is the first product built at Moreni in partnership with Rheinmetall. The Agilis project provides for the manufacturing of 400 amphibious armored personnel carriers for the National Defence Ministry.

The full development and serial production of the new Romanian Agilis in six versions will comply with the requirements set forth by the Ministry of National Defence.

To this end, the development and fitting out of the Moreni-based production capacities are running this year. A first step will be the training, at Rheinmetall’s production locations in Germany, of the Romanian experts who are to conceive together with German experts the development and serial production process.

Rheinmetall centers design develop and produce the FUCHS, BOXER or PUMA armored fighting vehicles. The 8×8 Agilis will be a modern amphibious armored vehicle competitive on the global market, the company’s representatives say.

Rheinmetall’s entire investment through the RMVS joint-venture will create over 600 direct and indirect jobs in Moreni. About 87 percent of the components will be produced and supplied from Romania, only the engine and the driveline are foreign supplies. The vehicle body for all versions will be manufactured in Moreni.

Agilis is a modern personnel carrier whose specifications meet the requirements of the armies of the two countries (Germany and Romania) – amphibious, high level of protection, 30 medium caliber turret. Through the development, production and maintenance activities in the Moreni-based RMVS, Romania will be able to fulfill its international peacetime commitments to NATO and the EU, as well as its pledges for crisis and war situations, ensuring the security of supplies related to these activities, the release points out.

Other armored carriers that are currently equipping the Romanian army have also been produced at Moreni.
