Nicholson: “I am sorry because a friend of mine is in prison”
After visiting former PM Adrian Nastase at the penitentiary, Baroness Emma Nicholson, rapporteur of the European Parliament for Romania during 2000-2004 was invited Sunday evening at the Antena 3 television. She said that she wanted to pay this visit and thanked the Minister of Justice for allowing her to see Nastase.
“I can neither criticise, nor support a decision of a court, but I am sorry because a friend of mine is in prison,” Nicholson added. The baroness mentioned that she talked with Adrian Nastase about foreign affairs: “I am in a committee of the British Parliament and, inevitably, I do not think that we could have met without discussing about foreign policy.” As for Romania, Nicholson said that the country has radically transformed over the last 22 years. “At my first visit here, in 1991, Romania was in a state of desperation, it was like hell, with many people fighting each other.”
The baroness added that, during her next visit to Romania, she will meet the Romanian prime minister. Asked if she has an opinion about the procedure of suspending President Traian Basescu, Emma Nicholson answered: “Yes, I have an opinion about this thing.
