The government wants to increase the number of the small and medium businesses in Romania by more than 40 percent by 2020, to reach 670,000, in which 3.2 million employees should work, compared to the 2.6 million who were working at the end of 2013, according to the draft strategy to aid SMBs. “The Government believes that a 41.23 percent increase in the number of economically active SMBs over the next seven years is a realistic target. In terms of number of SMBs per 1,000 inhabitants, reaching this target means 36 such companies per one thousand people in 2020 compared to 21.94 companies per 1,000 people in 2012,” reads the proposal of the Department for Small and Medium Businesses, Business Environment and Tourism. The SMBs contribution to the gross value added is estimated to grow over the next seven years by more than 41 percent to EUR 38 billion.
