Deputies of the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR) and the People’s Movement Party (PMP) requested on Wednesday in the plenary sitting of the Deputies’ Chamber the resignation of Liviu Dragnea as Speaker of the legislative forum and margined themselves from the release that he issued, together with the Senate President, as a reply to the position of the US Department of State regarding the Justice Laws.

“I wanted to say here, from the platform of Parliament, that, as leader of the PNL group I endorse the Strategic Partnership concluded with the United States of America 20 years ago, I support the fight against corruption, I endorse the autonomy of Justice, therefore, I find Liviu Dragnea’s and Calin Popescu-Tariceanu’s statements as null and void, an abuse of power and I request the resignation of Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber Liviu Dragnea. He does not represent us, or the voters who voted for him, as he does not represent many honest people of this country,” Deputy Raluca Turcan stated.

Representative of the PMP Corneliu Bichinet proposed that deputies draw up another reply to the US Department of State’s statement.

USR Deputy Lucian Stanciu-Viziteu stated that the release of the two Chamber heads was not made on his or his colleagues’ behalf.

Deputy of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Niculae Bacalbasa replied to the statements of his colleagues in the Opposition as follows: “I kindly ask the parrots of the parallel state to observe the sovereignty of the Romanian people.”

MP of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Maraton Arpad said he doesn’t understand what the colleagues of the Opposition want.

Deputy of the PMP Robert Turcescu said, in his turn, that Liviu Dragnea, although being the Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber, misses the plenary sittings which he should be leading.

Opposition walks out of Senate plenary session; session suspended for lack of quorum

A Senate plenary session was suspended on Wednesday after the parliamentary groups of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) and Save Romania Union (USR) walked out of it in protest against the common position expressed by the chairs of the two chambers of the Legislature on a press statement from the US Department of State on Justice legislation.

The decision of the USR and PNL came after a break for consultations among the floor leaders of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), PNL, USR and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR).

The group of the opposition People’s Movement Party (PMP) had walked out before the consultation.
