Over 100,000 jobs created in Romanian agriculture during 2007-2013


Over 100,000 jobs were directly created in the Romanian farming sector based on European Union funds during 2007-2013, while three million rural locals benefited from such investments, Vice Prime Minister Daniel Constantin, also a Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Tuesday, Agerpres reports.
‘More than 40,000 jobs were created during 2007-2013 and another 61,000 are at the phase of implementation under the contracts signed up until now. In other words, over 100,000 jobs were directly created in the Romanian farming sector based on European Union funds during 2007-2013 and an impressive number of rural locals benefited from such investments, three million beneficiaries more precisely,’ Constantin said at the launch of the first session of the new National Rural Development Programme (NRDP) 2014-2020.
He surveyed the investments made in the rural area from the EU funds earmarked Romania over 2007-2013, namely EUR 9.2 billion, EUR 8 billion of which is EU funds and EUR 1.2 billion from the national budget. ‘76,000 farmers have been assisted over this period, more than 3,000 SMEs conducting non-farming activity in the rural area have been funded. Furthermore, 1,968 kilometers of agricultural roads have been upgraded and 46,000 hectares have been protected by arrangements on European funds. The rehabilitated area that is to benefit from modern irrigation covers 300,000 hectares. Also, up until now alone, nearly 3,000 kilometers of water supply network, 4,000 kilometers of village roads have been upgraded and around 13,000 youths have benefited from funding ranging from 25,000 to 40,000 euros,’ the minister explained.
As many as 146,815 projects have been filed under the new NRDP totaling EUR 18.22 billion, with 87,699 funding contracts having already been signed with the relevant Romanian payment agency. The payments to the beneficiaries amount to EUR 6.3 billion, both from the EU contribution and the state budget.
The first measures of the new NRDP were launched at the agriculture ministry on Tuesday. The Programme will have only 14 measures, down from the previous 24 and it avails of EUR 10 billion in EU- and national budget funds.
