A man from Petrosani was attacked and injured by a bear Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and was admitted to the Deva Hospital. Paula Lupulescu, head of the Plastic Surgery Dept. of the Deva County Hospital yesterday said the man was in a state of shock and was to undergo multiple surgeries on his lower lip which was completely wrenched off by the bear’s claws. The victim also has wounds in his left arm, yet not very severe. Deva plastic surgeons collaborate with their peers at the Infectious Diseases section to eliminate any epidemiologic risk. The man, 45 years old, was attacked by a bear at a sheepfold between Salatruc and Sasa, on the outskirts of the Petrosani municipality, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. He said he heard a noise, grabbed an axe and went outside to see what was going on only to be attacked by a bear. The man managed to escape after one of the sheepfold dogs bit the bear’s legs. Teams of Hunedoara foresters and gendarmes yesterday patrolled the area where the incident took place. “We are monitoring the area and keep the locals informed. We must see what happened, we understood that the bear was wounded, but we don’t think it has the rabies. During this time of the year, bears descend towards orchard areas looking for food,” Marian Mustata, an official at the hunting association in charge of the area where the incident happened, said, who added that the decision has not yet been taken for the bear to be shot, but only to seek it in order to prevent further incidents. The Sasa area, where the sheepfold in question was located, is on the territory of the Polatiste Hunting Area handled by Baniceana Private Hunting Association. The area stretches between the Rusu Chalet in the Parang Mountains and the border with Gorj County.
