Popular Movement Party (PMP) Executive President Eugen Tomac announced on Thursday that his party has tabled a new bill on lowering the number of MPs to 300, stating that the party will bring “one million Romanians to convince PSD to no longer defy the will of most citizens.” He added that the PMP will ask the USR for support, criticising the fact that the PNL voted against the previous bill on lowering the number of seats in Parliament.
“Today, we have once again tabled in Parliament the bill on lowering the number of parliamentarians to 300. We will start a national campaign on this topic, because we believe the almost 10 million Romanians who took to the streets and said they want a Parliament with fewer and more efficient parliamentarians are right. I believe the time has come for the responsible parliamentarians to descend among the people, to go among the people and to demand the active citizens’ support to get rid of this toxic majority,” Eugen Tomac said.
Tomac added that the PMP will ask the USR for support on this bill, but will not ask for the PNL’s support, arguing that the Liberals voted against the previous bill on lowering the number of parliamentarians.
“We will definitely ask our colleagues from the USR for support. We won’t ask the PNL for support for a very simple reason – because this year [sic] this law was debated in Parliament and PSD and PNL voted against lowering the number of parliamentarians to 300. The bill was tabled by myself during the previous session of parliament, and I was surprised that PSD and PNL voted against it both within the special committees and within the plenum of the Senate and the House, but we hope USR will join the overture that we will launch,” he claimed.
Likewise, Tomac invites people to join PMP in this overture, because the referendum on lowering the number of parliamentarians must be observed even though it took place 8-9 years ago. He added that, if need be, PMP will bring “one million Romanians to convince PSD to no longer defy the will of most citizens.”
“We believe there is the need for a national campaign in which we would invite citizens to get involved alongside us, because a referendum must be observed, even though it took place 8-9 years ago. I believe that when citizens become aware of how important this bill is, we will manage to put the necessary pressure on politicians, for them to pass this important bill. If need be, we will bring one million Romanians outside Parliament to convince PSD to no longer defy the will of most citizens,” he added.
Asked what the national campaign on lowering the number of MPs to 300 will consist of, Eugen Tomac said public debates will be organised in all counties and the involvement of society as a whole is needed.
“First, we will hold public debates in all counties, inviting the citizens who believe that the number of parliamentarians must be lowered to 300. They are too many and, moreover, I believe the involvement of the entire civil society is needed. We don’t want this debate on parliamentary reform to remain solely in the stage of a bill and the stage of political or electioneering slogan. I believe all society must become aware of how toxic Parliament has become and this parliamentary reform can start via consistent action on the part of the entire society, and we are willing to undertake – alongside other organisations that are already supporting our bill – a debate on this topic,” Tomac concluded.
