The Christian Liberal Alliance. This will be the name under which PNL and PDL will operate until the party resulting from their merger will go through all legal stages. The announcement was made yesterday by the leaders of PDL and PNL, and the final decision will be taken during the congress meetings scheduled at the end of this week.
“We had the last meeting between the PDL and PNL delegations before the conventions and the PNL congress meeting. We analyzed the sociological surveys concerning the name that the PDL-PNL electoral alliance should have. That name will be the Christian Liberal Alliance PNL-PDL,” PDL President Vasile Blaga stated, realitatea.net informs. PNL President Klaus Iohannis stated that the right wing’s presidential candidate will be announced on August 5.
“We noted that we have two candidates: Mr. Predoiu from PDL and myself from PNL. We agreed to start conducting opinion polls this week. Each side will choose a polling house. We expect the results by August 4 at the latest, and we will announce on August 5 who will be designated as the Christian Liberal Alliance’s candidate,” Iohannis said.
Premier Victor Ponta stated on Tuesday in Sibiu, when asked whether PNL President Klaus Iohannis is a stronger competitor than Crin Antonescu, that in his opinion all presidential competitors are strong and he treats them with respect, Mediafax informs.
Opinion poll war
Mircea Geoana and Victor Ponta, PSD’s potential presidential candidates, have started an opinion poll offensive in order to prove which one of them can inflict a bigger defeat on Klaus Iohannis in the runoff, realitatea.net informs.
Mircea Geoana has not given up his dream of being president. That is why he has ordered, through the “Our Romania” Foundation whose founder he is, an opinion poll that shows that not only Ponta but he too would beat the right wing’s candidate in the presidential runoff.
According to the CURS poll, when asked “If Mircea Geoana and Klaus Iohannis were to qualify for the runoff, who would you vote with?” the answers were: Mircea Geoana – 52 per cent, and Klaus Iohannis – 48 per cent. If Victor Ponta were to face Iohannis in the runoff, he would win by 53 to 47 per cent. According to the opinion poll, if Ponta were to win the elections, Geoana would be preferred as Premier (65 per cent of respondents), followed by Liviu Dragnea (19 per cent), Dan Sova (7 per cent) and Valeriu Zgonea (2 per cent).
Premier Victor Ponta did not fall behind either, CSCI, the polling institute of Dan Sultanescu, his advisor, launching an opinion poll meant to ensure the PSD President’s peace of mind. According to that survey, if the first round of presidential elections were to take place next Sunday, 41 per cent of the respondents would vote for Victor Ponta, while only 28 per cent would vote for Klaus Iohannis, 10 per cent for Calin Popescu Tariceanu, 7 per cent for Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, 7 per cent for Dan Diaconescu and 3 per cent for Cristian Diaconescu, ‘Evenimentul Zilei’ daily informs. In the runoff Ponta would defeat Iohannis by 55 to 45 per cent. The CSCI survey was conducted on July 10-16, on a sample of 1,050 persons, and has a margin of error of +/- 3 per cent.
