Ponta compares Berlusconi to Ceausescu
Former Conservative premier Silvio Berlusconi’s return to power in Italy would be equivalent to Nicolae Ceausescu’s in Romania, ‘La Repubblica’ and AGI online quoted Romanian PM Victor Ponta as saying, while in Turin, Saturday. Ponta made the statement at the meeting of the European socialists and progressives entitled “Renaissance for Europa: Peace, Prosperity and Progress”, held in Turin, Friday and Saturday, and aimed at supporting the bid for premiership of Pierluigi Bersani, the candidate of Italy’s Center-Left Coalition, in the legislative election Feb 24-25. According to ‘La Repubblica’, Victor Ponta, who spoke in Italian, said: “To us, as a former communist country, joining the European has been a dream. Berlusconi however is not part of this dream, he is a nightmare. I can’t picture an Italy with Berlusconi in power again, the same way I can’t picture a Romania with Ceausescu back in the saddle again. The past should stay in the past, and what is important now is the future”.
Silvio Berlusconi, the leader of the Center-Right Coalition, on campaign stump Padua (northern Italy), gave a quick reply, saying that, if he was like Ceausescu, he would at least have had the kind of “powers” he, Berlusconi, has never had.
