PNL leader Crin Antonescu on Tuesday voiced new criticism against President Basescu and the European Commission
Two years after the founding of USL, its leaders Victor Ponta, Crin Antonescu and Daniel Constantin attended Tuesday evening the ‘Sinteza Zilei’ show on Antena 3 TV. Asked what they will do to rid the country of Basescu, PM Victor Ponta said that “President Traian Basescu and his army will never stop the series of political diversions.

” “We do not fear Traian Basescu. We have always fought him,” he added. However, Ponta added that, “after the December 9 elections, the president did not infringe his constitutional attributions” and hinted that he would  ot favour suspending him once again. “By the way we defend ourselves, one cannot happen anymore what occurred in 2010-2011. My option as prime-minister is to calculate the cost at this moment for Romania. (…) It is worth replacing people that compromised themselves and made abuses (…) We must stop the zones where money was wasted, I can do this every day. A major political crisis now would mean a very, very high cost for us,” Victor Ponta said.
“Basescu has one more year as president and I think it would be useless to start a major political crisis now,” the PSD leader mentioned.
In the same show, Senate speaker Crin Antonescu said that President Traian Basescu did not answer the questions about “the fleet, money laundering, the Mihaileanu house,” adding: “The criminal of criminals, the father of
criminals defied us all.” He made these statements while commenting on the MCV report and the credibility of Traian Basescu at the European Commission.
Antonescu added that President Basescu demanded a discussion with the premier and the speaker of the Senate over the MCV and “pretended to be very interested that things go well with the report.” However, the positions of President Basescu were contrary to this objective, the USL leader added.
According to Antonescu, the fight against corruption in Romania has been reduced to the Nastase and Voiculescu cases, because “they did not side with Basescu,” but if the two had acted differently, “then everything
would have been over.” The PNL leader warned that one accredits the idea that institutions like DNA or ANI are impartial and unbiased, but they have not probed cases of corruption in the entourage of Traian Basescu.
The speaker of the Senate emphasised that one must discuss the activity results of the European Commission, to see what it did with the EU during the last years.
He added that, when the president of the EC, Jose Manuel Barroso talks with Victor Ponta, “this is a discussion between the prime minister of a European country supported by 70 pc of the electorate,
probably the strongest, freshest and most legitimate premier or government in Europe at this moment” and a Commission whose results must be analysed.
“Let’s see what this Commission did with Europe these years, let’s see its results, its competence and legitimacy,” the PNL president stated.
According to Antonescu, the Commission failed to answer many questions over how it managed Europe these years, although many of its commissioners are quality individuals. He added that EC employees “juggle” with
Romania’s image. The PNL president mentioned that one cannot admit that the report of the European Commission attacks a media trust that is a long-time opponent of Traian Basescu.
Antonescu also labelled as unacceptable the fact that the EC reports “endlessly mention the same cases of corruption,” without mentioning whether corruption increased or not during the three years when Traian Basescu and PDL held the complete power in the country
